Classroom Guidance - I visit each classroom to present a whole group lessons 1x a month for 45-50 minutes.
K - Character Traits
1st - How to be a Peacemaker ( feelings, self-regulation tools, conflict resolution)
2nd - Free the Horses - learn the Think-Feel-Do cycle and how to make positive choices and develop character
3rd - Study Skills, Learning Styles, Conflict Resolution, Stress Management, Peer Pressure
4th - Friendships, Bullying, Choices
5th - Career Exploration
Small Counseling Groups - Groups are offered on various topics. Groups typically have 6 students within the same grade level. Group topics include newcomers, social skills, self esteem, coping with life changes, study skills, anger management, and character strengths. Groups meet during lunch time and last 6-8 sessions.
Individual Sessions - Individual sessions can be initiated by student self referral as well as teacher or parent referral. Sessions usually last 20-30 minutes depending on the age of the child. Sessions are planned around the child’s academic schedule in order to not interfere with learning. School counseling services are meant to be short-term, so a child is usually not seen individually more than 3- 5 times.
Peace Talks - Mediation sessions for students who need extra assistance resolving peer conflicts.
Consultation - I often consult with parents, teachers, other school staff and outside agencies to identify needs of the student and provide strategies as needed.
Coordination - I assist in the coordination of school-wide events such as spirit weeks (Peace Week, Bully Prevention, Character Education themes, Career Day), SOAR Celebrations which are quarterly, Holiday Hugs, Back Pack Buddies, PBIS/CD, Mentor/Mentee Program, 504 Coordinator, MTSS team member, Leadership Team member, BST (Behavior Support Team coordinator), Eagle Buddies, Ambassador program, GOTR, and service projects such as UNICEF, Warm Fuzzies, & Heifer International.
